What matters this morning
- Brent slipped below US$105 a barrel on Friday, yet closed the week almost 9% higher. Houthi forces reportedly captured Perim Island, in Bab el-Mandeb, on Friday. Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is already down to a handful of tracked transits a day. Our reading: the Red Sea route between Asia and Europe is now at risk too.
- The ECB raised its key rates by a quarter point on Thursday, its second rise this year, citing inflation from the Middle East conflict. The deposit rate rises to 2.5% this Wednesday. Our reading: each €10m of floating-rate debt costs about €25,000 more a year.

Houthi gains at Bab el-Mandeb raise shipping risks
Through August, supply chains faced a bottleneck at the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf’s only sea exit. Asia–Europe cargo through Suez also crosses Bab el-Mandeb, at the Red Sea’s southern end. Houthi forces took the port of Mocha on Thursday and reportedly captured Perim Island on Friday, putting that passage within their reach.
Shipments through Suez now pass within reach of a party to the conflict, and anything to or from Gulf ports still faces the Hormuz bottleneck. Going around the Cape of Good Hope avoids the Red Sea but not Hormuz, and adds roughly 10–14 days. Check which of your shipments take either passage, and what your carriers’ contingency plans and surcharge terms allow.
Whether the Perim Island capture is independently confirmed.
